The Five Elements in Saju: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water
Five elements as a traditional framework
Wood, fire, earth, metal and water describe relationships and cycles in traditional East Asian thought. In saju, stems and branches carry element associations. They are symbolic categories used to discuss how the parts of a birth chart relate to one another. They do not measure chemical substances or physical amounts in the body.
Generating and controlling cycles
The generating cycle is wood → fire → earth → metal → water → wood. The controlling cycle is wood → earth → water → fire → metal → wood. Traditional readings use these relationships alongside the Day Master, season and other chart details. A generating relationship is not automatically good, and a controlling relationship is not automatically bad.
Why counting is not enough
A chart may show more of one element than another, but a simple count does not capture every interpretation. Seasonal context and relationships between characters also matter. A missing element should not be read as a diagnosis or a guaranteed weakness. Use an element summary to learn the vocabulary before exploring more detailed interpretations.
