Korean Saju and BaZi: What Do the Four Pillars Mean?
A shared four-pillar framework
Saju literally refers to four pillars: the year, month, day and hour of birth. Each pillar combines a heavenly stem and an earthly branch. Together they form eight characters, which explains the term BaZi. Korean saju and Chinese BaZi belong to this broader East Asian tradition, while practitioners can differ in terminology and interpretation.
More than a birth-year animal
The zodiac animal associated with a birth year is only one part of the chart. The month, day and hour contribute additional characters and relationships. Two people with the same yearly zodiac animal can have different charts. The Day Master, the stem of the day pillar, helps organize a traditional reading.
Compare the inputs before comparing readings
Different calendar conventions, treatment of birth time and approaches to solar terms may produce differences around boundaries. Confirm the birth date, solar or lunar calendar and known birth time. A chart does not establish a single guaranteed future: use these traditions to learn about Korean culture and reflect on patterns, without replacing practical decisions.
